Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
