Sam Fender has handed over the full amount of his £25k award winnings to the MVT, which works to protect the UK's small music venues.

The star was given the prize on mid-October as his latest record his work was chosen as the top album of the last 12 months.

He has opted to donate the funds to the trust, in recognition of the essential function local spots had in his initial steps.

"I personally wouldn't be doing this success if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was beginning," remarked the artist. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have shut down – roughly 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, top acts like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a modest fee to their admission fees, which supports local stages.

Sam Fender also joined in, collecting over £100k on his live tour to assist thirty-eight local spots across the UK.

These funds supported venues that were confronting possible closure due to challenges arising from water damage, blazes and personal losses, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Some locations obtained funding support in improving amenities and gear that directly benefitted performers and fans.

"The idea that revenue from performances in large arenas helps the local stages, where it all starts for artists like me, is just sensible," the star has said.

He is far from the only musician to donate his award prize money to worthy causes.

In Pulp received the award in the mid-90s for their album Different Class, lead singer the singer announced that the band would give their cash to the charity War Child.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite shared her bounty among several charities, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also gave a grand to the center, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they needed updated gear," Ms Dynamite told outlets.

Two years ago, they gave their prize money to the local youth club that supported their band, in addition to other local music groups.

Additionally winners that year M People contributed their prize to a charity for MS after a close contact was diagnosed the illness.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," remarked vocalist the singer. "The cash was the extra but we could do without the bonus, because we had the cake. So our success touched the lives of others."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had rescued several grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to local control.

The Joiners in Southampton and the other in that location were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is supported by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "ownership units" in the properties.
