No fewer than 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
