Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

They also requested that he be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
