The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
