An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January surged in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

One account, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

But these probabilities had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in betting activity right before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

A small number of other platform users also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week would prevent public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
